Now it came to pass in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land, and a certain man of Bethlehem went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and their two sons. The name of the man was Elimelech. His wife was Naomi, and their two sons, Mahlon and Chilion.
Elimelech died, and Naomi was left with her two sons who took them wives of the women of Moab. The name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth.

When Judah is laid bare by a devastating drought, Elimelech takes his wife, Naomi, and their two sons, Mahlon and Chilion, to live in Moab.
